CGPA to Percentage: Conversion Formula for All Universities

By Calculators PointยทJune 12, 2026ยท8 min readยทUpdated Jun 22, 2026

Whether you are applying to a job, a university abroad, or a postgraduate program, you will almost certainly be asked to convert your CGPA to a percentage. The problem: there is no single universal formula. Each university, board, or institution uses a different multiplier. This guide covers every major system used in India and internationally.

What is CGPA?

CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is a standardized measure of academic performance. Instead of raw marks, each subject earns a grade point (typically 0โ€“10 in India, 0โ€“4 in the USA), and the CGPA is the weighted average across all subjects or semesters. It provides a consistent measure of overall academic achievement regardless of semester-to-semester variation.

Why Is There No Single Formula?

Different institutions define their grade scales differently. A 9.0 on a 10-point scale at one university may represent 85โ€“89%, while the same 9.0 at another university may represent 90โ€“94%. Always verify the official conversion formula from your institution's examination department.

  • Private sector: Either is accepted โ€” always specify the scale (e.g., "8.5/10")
  • Foreign universities: Convert to 4.0 GPA scale โ€” WES/ICAS services handle Indian transcripts
