About the Dividend Yield Calculator

Dividend yield is the annual dividend per share divided by the current share price โ€” a simple measure of the income return on a stock investment. A stock trading at $50 paying $2.00/year in dividends has a 4% yield; the same dividend payment after the stock rises to $60 yields only 3.33%.

Payout ratio โ€” annual dividends divided by earnings per share โ€” is the key metric for dividend sustainability. A company paying $2.00/year while earning $2.50/share has an 80% payout ratio: sustainable but leaving little room for earnings declines. A ratio above 100% means the company is paying out more than it earns โ€” typically unsustainable without dividend cuts or debt.

Dividend growth rate matters as much as current yield for long-term income investors. A stock with a 2% yield growing dividends at 8%/year doubles its income in 9 years. A stock with a 5% yield growing at 2%/year takes 35 years to double. This calculator's growth projection shows the yield-on-cost you'll receive in future years โ€” a metric "dividend growth" investors optimise for.

Tax treatment: qualified dividends (from US corporations held >60 days) are taxed at 0%, 15%, or 20% based on income. Ordinary dividends are taxed as regular income. Foreign dividends may have withholding taxes. REITs and MLPs have distinct tax treatment โ€” dividends may be non-qualified, increasing the effective tax rate.

A yield above 6% should prompt scrutiny: either the stock price has fallen (potential value or distress), or the company is maintaining an unsustainable payout. Check the payout ratio and dividend history before assuming a high yield is attractive.
