Free Sand Calculator Online

Sand volume and weight for landscaping, concrete mix and foundation work

✨ New

The Sand Calculator computes the volume and weight of sand needed to fill or cover a defined area and depth, whether you're laying a paver base, filling a sandbox, bedding a pipe trench, or mixing into concrete. It converts between cubic yards, cubic metres, and tonnes to match however your local supplier sells bulk sand.

Frequently Asked Questions

Sand volume = Area × Depth. For example, a 10 m² patio at 50 mm (0.05 m) depth needs 10 × 0.05 = 0.5 m³ of sand. Convert to tonnes: 0.5 m³ × 1.6 t/m³ (dry sand density) = 0.8 tonnes.
Dry sand weighs approximately 1,600 kg/m³ (1.6 tonnes/m³). Wet sand is heavier at around 1,920 kg/m³. Bulk bags (1 tonne) contain about 0.625 m³ of dry sand. Always order by volume when mixing concrete for consistency.
For mortar (no aggregate): a 1:3 mix uses 3 parts sand to 1 part cement by volume. For concrete (with aggregate): a 1:2:4 mix uses 2 parts sand. Use the Cement Calculator to get precise material quantities for your specific mix and volume.

About the Sand Calculator

Sand is used in construction in several distinct forms: sharp sand for concrete mixes and mortar, soft building sand for plastering and pointing, kiln-dried sand for jointing block paving, and coarse grit sand for drainage layers. The bulk density varies between these types, which affects how much a given volume actually weighs — and therefore how many delivery bags or tonnes to order.

This calculator uses standard bulk density values for each sand type and converts your area and depth into the volume and weight figures that bulk suppliers quote. Because sand is typically sold by the tonne (metric), the weight output is the most directly useful number for ordering.

The volume figure is useful when checking whether a hired trailer or tipper truck can carry the full load in one trip. For projects involving concrete, this calculator works in conjunction with the Cement and Gravel calculators so you can estimate all three constituent materials together.

When Should You Use This?

The Sand Calculator is ideally suited for contractors, builders, architects, and DIY enthusiasts who need to perform quick, accurate calculations related to general calculations. Use this tool when you need to verify figures, compare different scenarios, or get a precise answer without manual computation errors.

What Does The Result Mean?

The calculated output provides an instant, accurate resolution to your input parameters. You can use these results directly for your planning, assignments, or professional tasks, knowing they are based on standardized formulas.

Example Calculation

Sand required for a 5 m × 4 m patio paver base at 50 mm depth

📥 Inputs

  • Length: 5 m
  • Width: 4 m
  • Depth: 0.05 m (50 mm compacted depth)

🔢 Calculation Steps

  1. 1Volume = 5 × 4 × 0.05 = 1.0 m³
  2. 2Add 15% for compaction and wastage: 1.0 × 1.15 = 1.15 m³
  3. 3Dry sand bulk density ≈ 1,600 kg/m³
  4. 4Weight = 1.15 × 1,600 = 1,840 kg = 1.84 tonnes
✅A 5 m × 4 m paver base at 50 mm compacted depth requires approximately 1.15 m³ or 1.84 tonnes of sand.

Limitations of this Calculator

  • ⚠️Results are based purely on the mathematical relationship of the inputs provided.
  • ⚠️Does not account for edge cases or extreme outlier values that fall outside standard formula constraints.
  • ⚠️Calculated outputs should be double-checked against your specific real-world requirements before finalizing important decisions.
