Asphalt weight and cost for roads and driveways

✨ Nova

The Asphalt Calculator estimates the weight and approximate material cost of asphalt (hot-mix or cold-lay) needed for a road, car park, or driveway by calculating volume from dimensions and applying the standard asphalt density. Paving contractors and property owners use it to budget projects and verify supplier quotes before committing to an order.

Sobre Esta Calculadora

Asphalt is almost universally sold by the tonne, but paving jobs are specified in area and thickness. A standard 50 mm residential driveway layer uses roughly 115 kg of asphalt per square metre — a figure most contractors know by experience, but one that trips up homeowners getting their first paving quote.

Hot-mix asphalt (laid by specialist paving contractors) and cold-lay asphalt (available in bags from builders merchants for repairs) have slightly different densities. The calculator defaults to hot-mix density (approximately 2,300 kg/m³) but allows adjustment for different mix types or cold-lay products.

The material cost estimate is a rough baseline — actual project costs include plant hire, labour, sub-base preparation, and any kerb or edging work. Use this calculator to sanity-check contractor quotes: if a quote implies significantly more or fewer tonnes than the calculator suggests, ask for clarification before signing anything.

A Calculadora de Asfalto estima o peso e o custo aproximado de material de asfalto necessário para uma estrada ou estacionamento.

Exemplo Resolvido

Asphalt for a residential driveway 12 m × 4 m at 50 mm depth

Entradas:

  • Length: 12 m
  • Width: 4 m
  • Thickness: 0.05 m (50 mm compacted depth)

Passo a Passo:

  1. Area = 12 × 4 = 48 m²
  2. Volume = 48 × 0.05 = 2.4 m³
  3. Add 5% for waste and compaction: 2.4 × 1.05 = 2.52 m³
  4. Asphalt density ≈ 2,300 kg/m³ (standard hot-mix)
  5. Weight = 2.52 × 2,300 = 5,796 kg ≈ 5.8 tonnes
  6. At £80/tonne: estimated material cost = 5.8 × £80 = £464
Resultado: A 12 m × 4 m driveway at 50 mm compacted depth requires approximately 5.8 tonnes of asphalt, with material cost around £464 at typical bulk rates.
