After fertilization in the fallopian tube, the embryo travels toward the uterus over 5–7 days, developing from a zygote into a blastocyst. Implantation occurs when this blastocyst burrows into the endometrial lining, typically 6–12 days after ovulation.
During implantation, some women experience light spotting or cramping — called implantation bleeding. This is distinct from a menstrual period: it's lighter, shorter (a day or two), and occurs a week or more before a missed period. Not all women experience this, and its absence does not indicate failed implantation.
The pregnancy hormone hCG begins rising after implantation. Home pregnancy tests detect hCG in urine, but levels are often too low to register positive until 12–14 days after ovulation — around the time of a missed period. Testing earlier can produce false negatives even when pregnancy has occurred.
