Surface area is the total area of all outer faces of a three-dimensional shape. Unlike volume (which measures interior space), surface area measures the exterior. For manufacturing and engineering, surface area determines how much material is needed to coat, paint, insulate, or wrap an object.

Each shape has its own formula. Cubes: SA = 6s². Rectangular prisms: SA = 2(lw + lh + wh). Spheres: SA = 4πr². Cylinders: SA = 2πr² + 2πrh. Cones: SA = πr² + πrl (where l is the slant height). Pyramids require the base area plus four triangular faces. This calculator applies the correct formula and shows the component areas separately.

Applications include calculating the paint needed to cover a water tank, determining the aluminum required to wrap a package, computing heat loss through building surfaces (insulation problems), and sizing labels or packaging for products.

  2. Two circular ends: 2 × π × 5² = 2 × 3.14159 × 25 = 157.08 cm²

  4. Total surface area = 157.08 + 376.99 = 534.07 cm²
