Required Minimum Distribution from retirement accounts at age 73+ using IRS life expectancy tables
Sobre Esta Calculadora
Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) are mandatory annual withdrawals from traditional IRAs and 401(k)s starting at age 73 (as of the SECURE 2.0 Act). The IRS requires this because tax-deferred retirement accounts have never been taxed — RMDs ensure that money eventually enters the taxable income stream.
The calculation uses IRS Uniform Lifetime Table life expectancy factors. At age 73, the factor is 26.5; at 80, it's 20.2; at 85, it's 16.0. Divide your December 31 account balance by the applicable factor: a $500,000 IRA at age 75 (factor 24.6) requires a $20,325 distribution that year.
Missing an RMD triggers a 25% penalty on the amount not withdrawn — one of the harshest penalties in the tax code. The first RMD can be delayed until April 1 of the year after you turn 73, but this means taking two RMDs in one year, which can push you into a higher bracket and affect Medicare IRMAA surcharges.
Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs) — up to $105,000/year — count toward your RMD without being included in your taxable income, making them an excellent strategy for charitably inclined retirees who don't need the RMD income.
Calcule as distribuições obrigatórias.
